NICE has published NICE Guideline (NG) 72 on Developmental follow-up of children and young people born preterm.

Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of developmental problems and disorders, such as learning disorders and behavioural problems, which can persistent into adolesence.

The recommendations made by the guideline focus on specialist developmental support and surveillance for the early identification of developmental problems and disorders in under 18s that were born preterm. Areas covered by the guideline include:

  • information and support for parents and carers of all preterm babies
  • risk and prevalence of developmental problems and disorders
  • enhanced developmental support and surveillance
  • delivering enhanced developmental support and surveillance
  • neonatal audit.
