Guidance and quality standard on hip fracture updated by NICE

Published: 18 May 2017

NICE has updated Clinical Guideline (CG) 124 on Hip fracture: management and Quality Standard (QS) 16 on Hip fracture in adults.

After reviewing the evidence for the management of intracapsular hip fracture, NICE has changed recommendations 1.6.2 and 1.6.3 on surgical procedures to emphasise the role of total hip replacement. Changes were also made to statement 3 on Intracapsular fracture in QS16 to reflect the alterations to recommendations made in CG124.

Recommendations made by CG124 cover:

  • imaging options in occult hip fracture
  • timing of surgery
  • pain relief
  • anaesthesia and surgical procedures
  • mobilisation strategies
  • multidisciplinary management
  • parent and carer information.

Drawing on the advice provided by CG124, the standards set by QS16 are expected to contribute to improvements in the following outcomes:

  • length of hospital stays
  • readmissions to hospital
  • reoperation rates
  • mortality rates.
