The British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) has published The BSR guideline for the management of systemic lupus erythematosus.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease, affecting almost 1 in 1000 people in the UK in 2012. Prone to relapses and remissions, SLE can cause serious morbidity due to flares of activity and cumulative damage. While SLE survival has improved over the last 40 years, people with SLE still die 25 years younger than average in the UK.
The BSR guideline includes recommendations on the following:
- clinical and serological features prompting consideration of a diagnosis of SLE
- assessment of SLE patients
- monitoring of SLE
- management of mild, moderate, and severe SLE.
