The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) has published the 2018 edition of the Global strategy for the diagnosis, management, and prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the second most common lung disease in the UK after asthma; almost 2% of the UK population live with COPD. Almost 30,000 people in the UK died as a result of their COPD in 2012.
In the 2018 update of the GOLD COPD report:
- minor revisions were made to incorporate evidence from key peer-reviewed research published between January 2016 and July 2017
- this included changes to table 3.3 on commonly used medications in COPD maintenance and the refined ABCD assessment tool (figure 2.4).
- the term ‘gender’ was replaced with ‘sex’ throughout.
