Guidelines Checklist

I read with interest the Q&A in Guidelines in Practice (July 2000,Vol 3) asking about a definitive list of guidelines. I was disappointed that the answer did not include 'contact your local health librarian', as library and information professionals produce lists for a living!

I enclose a handout (see below) that I often give people who ask about guidelines, and would be interested to hear what you think of its usefulness.

The principle behind this checklist is that your approach to searching for guidelines should:

begin with evidence-based/clinically effective guidelines
before doing/requesting primary searches on MEDLINE, CINAHL etc.

Use the checklist below to search for clinically effective/evidence-based guidelines:

Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR)

Scottish Intercollegiate Network Guidelines (SIGN)

Guideline Appraisal Project

Canadian Medical Association

New Zealand Guidelines Group

NLM Health Services/Technology Assessment

Guideline Project

North of England Evidence Based Guidelines

St George's Health Care Evaluation Unit

UK Health Centre
